Results vs Performance Driven Leaders in Optometry

Results-driven leaders are leaders who are driven to achieving a specific goal or objective focusing on the result and not on the process, performance, or the gained experience. They leverage all their resources to get results as quickly as possible. They know how to commit to achieving results while at the same time engaging team members into a fun-to-work-in environment. Employees who work with a result-driven boss would feel the tremendous emphasis on the sense of urgency in every task they do. Those bosses are great motivators when they want their employees to perform and bring results.

Harvard Business Review authors Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman found that younger leaders under thirty, are more likely to be rated result-driven, high performers, and know how to engage their teammates. Moreover, compared to middle and top management, supervisors in companies, are twice as likely to be highly result-driven, performance-oriented, and have high team satisfaction.

Good performance does not necessarily lead to the desired results and goals. For example, we may provide the best eye test but we don’t schedule recalls. Another example is to examine people’s eyes and be able to provide the best telemedicine experience but not be able to sell optical frames. If Optometrists focus solely on accomplishing goals and the bottom line, they make their staff members less motivated thinking that their company does not think about them. What Optometrists should do is to know what motivates their staff, plan, and engage the team in the most efficient way.

Result-driven leaders need to be well organized, have clear goals, have strong strategic planning, and employ their best resources to quickly accomplish their goals. Leaders who are good at displaying those different characteristics are also good at clearly communicating their strategy and direction, inspiring and motivating employees to work harder, and achieve results the quickest way possible.
